Changes coming to high school basketball

The National Federation of State High School Associations  has approved changes beginning in the 2023-24 basketball season.
In the past, teams were awarded one-and-one free throws for the seventh, eighth and ninth team fouls then two shots for any the following fouls in the half.
In the future, players will get two shots when the opposing team reaches five team fouls in each quarter. Team fouls will reset at the start of each quarter.
“The rules committee studied data that showed higher injury rates on rebounding situations and saw this as an opportunity to reduce opportunities for rough play during rebounds,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the basketball rules committee said in a news release.
