CCS wrestling first at Hemingford, sixth at Chadron

Chase County wrestlers had multiple opportunities to improve their records last week as the team traveled to a quadrangular in Hitchcock County and an overnight trip to invites at Hemingford and Chadron.
Team 2-1 at quad
CCS faced Hitchcock County, Cambridge and Sutherland at Trenton.
The Longhorns took a 42-30 win over the Falcons in their opening dual.
Westyn Mendenhall won at 132 lbs. with a pin and Jaret Peterson earned a pin at 285 lbs.
Trevin Moreno at 113 lbs., Tyler O’Neil at 145 lbs., Brice Vitosh at 160 lbs., Brad Speaker at 170 lbs. and Zach Tarin at 195 lbs. suffered losses.
Cayden White, Malachi Christensen, Luis Co, Cody Duffy and Thomas Reeves picked up wins by forfeit.
The teams had double forfeits at 106 lbs. and 220 lbs.
    CCS defeated Cambridge 40-33.
Mendenhall won his match by pin and Vitosh picked up a victory by major decision.
Taking losses for the Longhorns were Christensen, O’Neil, Duffy, Speaker and Reeves.
Moreno, White, Co, Tarin and Peterson won by forfeit.
Only one weight was a double forfeit, 220 lbs, and the Longhorns only forfeited one other match, 106 lbs.
The evening wrapped up with a loss to SPVA foe Sutherland, 63-16.
White and Reeves picked up Chase County’s only wins. White won by fall and Reeves won by major decision.
Peterson won his 220 match by forfeit.
CCS forfeited at 106 lbs. and 285 lbs.
Christensen, Mendenhall, O’Neil, Duffy, Vitosh, Speaker and Tarin lost by pin.
Co lost by a 9-5 decision.
First in Hemingford
With five wrestlers finishing first or second, CCS claimed the team title at Hemingford Friday.
White won both his matches, one by pin and one by tech fall, to take first at 120 lbs.
Peterson spent a combined 2:40 on the mat and took first place with three pins at 285 lbs.
    Four Longhorns were runners up.
Christensen was 2-1 at 126 lbs. Christensen’s only loss came on a 8-7 decision.
Co split his matches at 138 lbs. and received second place.
Vitosh won his first three matches by fall or tech fall, but lost his fourth match by a 10-6 decision.
Mendenhall went 2-1, winning two matches by decision, at 132 lbs.
Reeves also finished as runner up at 195 after splitting matches.
Duffy went 2-2 at 152 lbs., Moreno was 1-2 at 113 lbs., George Colton was 0-3 at 126 lbs., Speaker was 0-2 at 170 lbs. and Tarin 0-2 at 195 lbs.
Saturday invite at Chadron
The Longhorns’ placed sixth at Chadron Saturday.
Peterson led the way, working through a five-man bracket to take first place finish at 220 lbs. Peterson won both his matches by pin. In the championship match, Peterson faced the same wrestler he saw in last week’s first-place match at the CCS Invite, Perkins County’s Austin Meyer, and for the second week in a row, Peterson pinned Meyer.
Three freshmen placed third, Co at 138 lbs., Reeves at 182 lbs and Zach Tarin at 195 lbs.
In a 13-man bracket, Co lost his quarterfinal match, but bounced back to win two matches by pin and two by decision.
Reeves was in the same boat  losing in the quarterfinals before finishing the day with two wins, both pins. Reeves was seeded third out of seven.
Tarin won his quarterfinal match but was pinned in the semifinals. Tarin had two pins on his way to third place out of nine wrestlers.
At 120 lbs., White went 3-2 but didn’t place.
Winning one out of two matches on the day was Mendenhall at 132 lbs., Duffy at 152 lbs. and Brice Vitosh at 160 lbs.
Up next
This week won’t be nearly as hectic for the Longhorns.
CCS will be in Curtis Friday for the Medicine Valley Invite.
The SPVA conference meet is also looming. The Longhorns will be in Bridgeport for that meet Feb. 3.
