Liz Mollendor For The Imperial Republican
One of the finals matches of the Broken Bow Invite drew a big crowd as it featured the two best Class C wrestlers at 220 lbs. Chase County’s Jaret Peterson, #1 in Class C, looks for a quick point as time runs down in his 4-5 loss to Broken Bow’s Cal Wells, #2 in Class C.

CCS wrestlers start off at Garden County, Broken Bow

Chase County wrestlers saw a variety of formats and opponents in their first week of competition.
The Longhorns headed to Oshkosh for the Garden County Triangular with Bridgeport Thursday.
CCS Head Coach Matt Vlasin said the competition level was down from the last couple years, but his team came out with phenomenal intensity.
Chase County beat Garden County 45-16, winning three of the five weights that wrestled.
CCS went on to beat Bridgeport 45-18 and won four of the six weights that wrestled.
Vlasin said the Longhorns weren’t able to match the intensity they had at Garden County when they traveled to Broken Bow Saturday for varsity and JV invites.
Although CCS had a lot of first timers on the mat in the JV ranks, Vlasin was impressed with how well they wrestled.
On the varsity side, Chase County had two wrestlers competing for third place and one for first.
Jaret Peterson, ranked first in Class C at 220 lbs., pinned his first two opponents to advance to the championship match against Class C #2 Call Wells of Broken Bow. Both wrestlers are in the C4 district.
The match went the distance with Peterson coming out on the short end of the stick, 4-5.
Vlasin said it was similar to former Longhorn Trevor Peterson’s matches with Broken Bow’s Lathan Duda, in that the Broken Bow wrestlers, then and now, took very defensive positions.
Thomas Reeves won his 195 lb. third place match against Gordon-Rushville’s Tobi Berndt. Reeves’ only loss on the day came to Class C #2 Max Denson.
Dawson Mollendor, who’s battling a sprained ankle, finished fourth at 182 lbs. Both of Mollendor’s losses were to Gordon-Rushville’s Curtis Rittgarn.
Broken Bow, Class C’s #1 team, won the invite with 232 points, well ahead of second place Gordon-Rushville, 149 points.
Up next
The Longhorns will be at the Southern Valley Invite Friday. Vlasin said it will be interesting to see how his wrestlers bounce back after last week. Heading to Southern Valley where Chase County will see some smaller schools won’t hurt.
Vlasin said wrestlers’ weights will be “out of sorts” for at least one more week.
A handful of wrestlers will be down to their preferred weights by the Bridgeport/Sidney Invite Dec. 17 and the rest will be there after Christmas, he said.
Among the teams the Longhorns will be battling at Southern Valley is district opponent Red Cloud/Blue Hill. Vlasin said it will be good to see the Warcats early in the season.
