The Irish had trouble with the defense of Chase County. Riley Rusher, Kylee Wiest and Miranda Spady put up a wall to stop the St. Pats kill attempt.

CCS Volleyball team wins SPVA Tournament

The CCS Longhorns entered the SPVA volleyball tourney as the fifth seed. They left Saturday with the Championship. Head coach Kristy McNair stated before the tournament that she thought her team had a very good chance of winning the title.
McNair said, “We are starting to play as a team and getting wins over Perkins County and N. P. St. Pats last week has really helped with our confidence.”
The Longhorns started the tournament playing the fourth seeded Irish of St. Pats. The Longhorns dominated in the first set winning 25-10.
The second set was much closer but the Horns got the win 25-22 to take the match.
That put the Longhorns in a match against number one seeded Bridgeport who had a bye the first round. The Lady Longhorns didn’t miss a beat and swept Bridgeport in straight sets 25-16 and 25-19.
That set up a rematch of last year’s finals against Hershey. Last year Hershey got the best of the Longhorns, beating them in straight sets. The Longhorns returned the favor, defeating the Panthers in straight sets and taking the SPVA title.
It was a very close first set with the Panthers almost closing it out. The Panthers were up 22-24 when the Longhorns rallied with three straight points to take the lead 25-24. Hershey scored the next two points to take the lead by one.
The Longhorns were not to be denied and scored three straight points to win the set 28-26.
The Longhorns held a slight lead early in the second set and just kept slipping a little further in front of the Panthers, winning the set 25-20 and the match 2-0 to return the title to the Longhorns.
The Longhorns had their final regular season game and parents night Tuesday, Oct. 17 at home against Hershey.
Hershey beat the Longhorns at the Lexington Invite on Sept. 2, so this will be the rub match for the two teams. Details of this match will be in next week’s issue of the Republican.
