CCS Volleyball team wins 2 and loses 1 in Homecoming week

The Lady Longhorn volleyball team traveled to North Platte for a triangular on Tuesday Sept. 26 to face North Platte St. Pats (10-9) and Southwest (20-2).
The Longhorns started the night off looking strong against the Irish. The teams traded points through the first three servers until Riley Rusher stepped up and served five staight points to pull away from St. Pats. The Longhorns never looked back winning the first set 25-16.
The second set stayed much closer but the Longhorns pulled away midway through the set with the help of Hayley Rusher serving four straight aces. The Horns finished off the set winning 25-20 to take the first match.
The Southwest Roughriders played a very aggressive match against the Longhorns showing their dominance on the court. The Horns fell in straight sets 16-25 and 14-25.
The junior varsity was also in action. The JV’s split sets with St. Pats losing their first set 15-25 and winning the second 25-13.
In the match with Southwest JV’s the Longhorns dominated. After winning the first set 25-13, the Horns started the second set carrying all that momentum forward scoring the first nine points behind the serving of Ali Reeves.
The Horns won the set 25-11 to take the match.
On Thursday Sept. 28 the Perkins County Plainsmen hosted the Longhorns for varsity, junior varsity and reserve games.
The reserves started the night a little slugish dropping the first set 23-25. However that would be the only set the Plainsmen would win that night.
The reserves came back strong in the second set, winning 25-19.
In the junior varsity match the Longhorns fed off the momentum of the reserves, beating the Plainsmen in straight sets 25-18 and 25-12.
In the varsity match Perkins County came in with a 14-8 record. The Longhorns didn’t pay much attention to that and went to work on the court.
The Plainsmen had trouble with the defense of the Longhorns seeing many of their kill attempts stuffed at the net.
The Longhorns won in three staight sets with scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-18.
That should make the upcoming SPVA tournament very interesting. The Longhorn varsity will get a nice break to rest up a little from a very hectic schedule.
Head coach Kristy McNair likes her teams chances in the tournament. She said “Our girls are really starting to play as a team and the St. Pats and Perkins County wins should really help with their confidence.”
As of Friday October 6, the point standings had Bridgeport at number one seed with 42 points. Perkins County had the second seed with 41.273 points, St. Pats would be third with 40.714, Hershey fourth with 40.222, Chase County fifth with 39.960 and Kimball sixth with 37.611.
These numbers could change a little before the tournament but it looks like CCS will be playing the Hershey Panthers in the first round, who have a record of 8-10.
This would be a rematch from earlier this year when the two teams met in the Lexington Invite. Hershey won the first meeting 2-1. The Lady Horns have improved a lot during the season which should make for a very good match.
Hershey also took a win recently over Bridgeport. With the Longhorns having recent wins over Perkins County and St. Pats, a win over the Panthers could set the table for a very good tournament.
