CCS volleyball sweeps Yuma

The Chase County volleyball team had a light week of work with only one game on its schedule last week.
The Longhorns made the trip to Yuma, Colorado Sept. 6 and came home with a sweep.
Both teams struggled to hold serve in the early points of the match. CCS led 13-11 before increasing its lead to 19-14. Joee Clevenger finished off the 25-20 win with four-straight points serving.
The Longhorns only let Yuma hold serve once in the second set. Liz Reeves and Bryn McNair served three aces to give CCS a 9-4 lead. With Landree McNair serving, the Longhorns increased that lead to 17-6. Chase County took the set 25-9.
Yuma put up a fight in the third set. The Longhorns trailed 7-10 before CCS found another gear. Ali McNair served Chase County to a 13-10 lead, but Yuma kept pace. CCS led 19-18 before Reeves served the Longhorns up to match point. Chase County took the match with a 25-19 win.
CCS Head Coach April Lambert said Longhorn servers did a good job serving more aggressively.
“Without a lot of height at the net, it allowed us to mix it up on offense and swing away. Second set we really dominated on serve and pass. We need to continue to do well in that aspect. Our defense did a great job adjusting to some of their tips and rolls and picking up most of their offense,” said Lambert
    Saturday the C-team beat Colorado’s Holyoke 25-16, 25-18 and Sedgwick County 23-25, 25-10, 17-15.

The Longhorns, now 3-4, hosted Sedgwick County, Colorado (9-0) Tuesday.
“Sedgwick County is a Colorado state champion. They know how to compete and what it takes to win so we will need to be on our toes and ready to put together a complete game with few errors on our skills,” Lambert said.
CCS will play in the McCook tournament Saturday.
The tournament begins at 10 a.m. MT. Chase County will face Gering (2-2) in the second game in the Senior High gym. Awaiting the Longhorns in their second game will be Cambridge (8-1) or Decatur Community, Kansas (0-7). The Trojans are ranked sixth in Class D1 by the Omaha World Herald.
