CCS takes on Class C1’s best, avenges SPVA loss

Since Jan. 10 the Chase County girls basketball team faced nine straight teams with winning records.
Two of those losses have been to Class C1 No. 1 Bridgeport, one in the SPVA tournament Jan. 20 and one last Tuesday.
The Bulldogs, who recently cracked the all class top 10 and are a subdistrict foe, beat CCS 61-26 last week.
With subdistricts to begin next week, CCS currently sits as the third seed behind Hershey, a team the Longhorns beat 57-39 Jan. 28.
The bunny bracket game for the C1-12 subdistrict will be played Monday in Bridgeport with games to follow Tuesday and Thursday.
Bryn McNair led the Longhorns in the loss to Bridgeport with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
CCS was outscored 14-46 in the paint, but did out rebound the Bulldogs, 34-30.
CCS rebounded from the loss with back-to-back wins, including avenging a Jan. 21 SPVA loss to NPSP.
The Longhorns hosted the Irish for senior night Friday and quickly fell behind 0-7. Chase County used a seven-minute span across the first and second quarters to score 19 straight points, including 11 in a row from B. McNair and six straight by Olivia Spady.
NPSP erased the Longhorns’ 27-15 lead with a run of 13 straight points in the third.
After outscoring NPSP 8-2 to start the fourth quarter Chase County regained the lead. The Longhorns’ five point lead was erased and the game was tied at 40-40 with 2:50 remaining.
McNair went to work down the stretch to ensure the 50-44 win for CCS.
    B. McNair and St. Pat’s Tonja Heirigs carried their teams in the scoring column. B. McNair finished with 31 points while Heirigs scored 27. McNair also had 16 rebounds.
The Longhorns wrapped up their week with a 39-25 win over Class B Gering (4-16).
It took nearly four minutes for CCS to score in the game and the Longhorns only made one first quarter field goal.
Ali McNair scored two buckets for Chase County early in the second quarter and Landree McNair added three points, including the basket that gave CCS a 16-15 lead. Two late baskets by B. McNair sent CCS to the locker room leading 21-15.
After a low scoring third quarter, the Longhorns headed into the fourth, leading 30-17. Gering cut that lead to 10 points, 32-22, before Chase County pulled away for the win.
CCS made 15-20 free throws in the game and had 21 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points. All seven Longhorns who saw action pulled down an offensive rebound.
    B. McNair scored 22 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and had seven blocks.
