Broncos girls split games with MV, Sutherland

Both Wauneta-Palisade basketball teams found themselves adding to their win column after games last week.
The girls team looked like it would take a win last Thursday at home, but Medicine Valley had other plans in mind.
WP made two three pointers and all four of its free throw attempts as it took a 14-3 lead after the game’s first eight minutes.
With five players scoring in the second quarter, WP led 21-9 with four minutes left in the half and 25-14 at halftime.
That lead would shrink in the third quarter. The Broncos’ lead was down to 35-33 by the end of the third quarter, but WP would open up a double-digit margin, 48-38, with three minutes left in the game. The game was far from over. The Raiders made two three pointers before two free throws by GraCee Goings with 35 seconds left gave the Broncos a 50-44 advantage. MV still had more in its tank and nailed two more 3s. A WP turnover following Med. Valley’s final three led to a Broncos’ foul that set up MV to hit one free throw. With 11 seconds on the clock, WP had no answer and lost the game 50-51.
Head Coach Matt Cox said the Broncos made some bad mistakes in the last minute of the game and it cost them the win.
“Hopefully we learned something,” Cox added.
Goings led WP with 14 points.
Peyton Cox had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Izzy Stehno pulled down 12 rebounds.
The Broncos snapped a seven-game losing streak one night later in Sutherland.
Cox said it was nice to finally get a win in 2024.
“It’s been a long dry spell,” he added.
WP led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter thanks to six points and five from Emma Acton.
Despite only two field goals in the second quarter, WP increased its lead before halftime. The Broncos made five free throws, but also put the clamps on the Sailors and gave up only one point.
With a 23-13 lead at the start of the second half, WP put Sutherland to bed in the third quarter with a 17-7 run behind seven points by Cox.
The Broncos were able to empty their bench to finish off the 49-31 win.
Cox notched another double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Goings and Acton each scored 10 points.
WP’s boys team lost 38-52 to Medicine Valley then picked up its first win of the season at Sutherland, 39-36.
