Broncos back in the saddle at Sutherland Booster Invite

After weeks of anticipation, the Wauneta-Palisade track teams saw their first competition of the season Saturday at the Sutherland Booster Invite.
“For the first meet, I thought it went well considering all the adversity we have had with the weather and having indoor practices,” Wauneta-Palisade Head Coach Dawn Doetker said, noting that her team has been dealing with shin splints, sore muscles and other school activities where the kids have been gone.
The WP girls’ team finished fifth and the boys seventh.
Despite having multiple athletes gone to the state FFA convention, Doetker said everyone competed hard.
Kyle Jutten won the high jump and Peyton Cox won the shot put for the Broncos.
Jacksen Littrel placed in both throws and ran with Jutten, Gabriel McCrumb and Ashton Wheeler in the 400-meter relay that placed fourth.
Wheeler placed in the 200-meter dash and long jump.
Doetker said she was  proud and excited for the boys 4x800 relay, Ashton McCrumb, Luke Sims, Kameran McCrumb  and Collin Bley.
“We just threw it together.  They placed and ran their best,” she said.
Top three finishers for the girls were freshman Cheyenne Parrish in the 200-meter dash, freshman Lillian Dinnel in the high jump and triple jump, as well as junior GraCee Goings in the discus.
The girls’ 400-meter relay, McKenna Doetker, Parrish, Ryleigh McCrumb and Halle Bardsley, also placed third.
Doetker said the freshman girls really stepped up for WP which was very exciting to see.
Overall, Doetker said it was a good start to the season.
“We still have to continue to see the big picture, still need to work hard in practice and build stamina. Conditioning is very key for the next few weeks since we are behind due to the weather.  I’m praying that the weather will be good for us,” she said.

WP was at the Dundy County Stratton Invite in Benkelman Tuesday.
The Broncos will stay busy and head to the Don Stine Invite in Cambridge Thursday.
After Easter, Wauneta-Palisade will return to Cambridge for the Medicine Valley Invite April 14 then have the Hitchcock County Invite April 19.
