Katie Acton has taken over the Wauneta-Palisade band and music programs. Acton splits her days between Wauneta and Palisade.

WP job best of both worlds for Acton

Not everyone can make the jump from Spanish teacher to music and band teacher, but Wauneta-Palisade’s Katie Acton is up to the challenge.
Acton taught Spanish for two years at Hitchcock County Schools, where her husband teaches in the music program. Acton said she’s better at reading and writing Spanish than speaking it.
Music, however, is right up her alley.
The job opening at Wauneta-Palisade gave Acton the chance to be close to home and teach music.
“It’s the best of both worlds,” she said.
Acton has a degree in Music Education K-12 Band and Choir from Wayne State College.
Growing up and graduating from Wahoo, Acton said some of her favorite memories come from her involvement in music.
Acton “made some great friends because of band,” she said, and it’s how she met her husband.
“I wanted to be able to share my love of music with others, and hopefully they will love music, too,” she said.
Acton splits her time between WP’s two attendance centers.
Her mornings are spent in Wauneta with sixth grade music, 7-12 band and choir.
After lunch she heads to Palisade to work with elementary students.
Though this will be Acton’s first year as a K-12 music teacher, WP Superintendent Randy Geier said her time at Hitchcock County has given her plenty of experience with students.
