Wide range of topics in upcoming MPCC community classes

    Photography, robotics for youths, food and exercise are just a few of the topics Mid-Plains Community College will explore in 2023.
    A listing of the MPCC community education classes is out and prospective students can begin registering online now.
    Classes are scheduled from January through May. Some are free and others have a small fee attached. All will be held at the Imperial MPCC campus unless otherwise noted.
    Here is the schedule:
    Get to Know Your Camera–Jan. 28, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn buttons, features, menu items and settings on your camera. If you ever wanted to “get off of auto” settings, the class is for you. Taught by Richard Haneline, $85 fee.
    Advanced Robotics for Youths (age 8-11)—Thursdays, Feb. 2-23, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Students who completed the beginning class are welcome to enroll. STEM concepts emphasized. Taught by Chance Thayer, $45 fee.
    Healthy Soups in Minutes—Feb. 20, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Fast, flavorful and fun recipes for winter soup-making with tips for using multi-cookers and slow cookers. Taught by Nancy Frecks, $20 fee.
    Freezer Meals—Feb. 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Plan, purchase and prepare healthy meals for busy days. Taught by Nancy Frecks, $20 fee.
    Microsoft Office Excel 2019 Basics—Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. Learn how to work with Excel in this introductory course. Taught by Sheri Hink-Wagner, $69 fee comes with resource guide.
    Invisible Wounds: Brain Injury in the Elderly—March 2, noon to 1 p.m. Learn about brain injury signs and symptoms. Identifying this in the elderly population will help provide proper treatment. Determine differences between dementia and brain injuries. Taught by Brain Injury Alliance of NE staff, free.
    QPR Training: Question/Persuade/Refer—March 9, 5 to 6 p.m. The class helps participants understand how to talk about suicide, identify signs and feel comfortable engaging someone thinking about suicide. Taught by Brian Obert, free.
    Acrylic Collage—March 14, 21, 28, 9 a.m. to noon. Explore acrylic painting and collage with emphasis on composition, color, quality of application and expression. All experience levels welcome. Supplies provided. Taught by Marcia Bauerle, $99 fee.
    Kettlebell—April 4, 11, 18, 25, noon to 1 p.m. or 5:30 to 6:30  p.m. Kettlebell exercise is designed to build endurance and strength as it combines weightlifting and cardiovascular workouts. Taught by Amy Sabatka, $45 fee.
    Astrophotography: Capturing the Milky Way—May 20, 6:15 p.m. to midnight at Enders Reservoir. This is an on-location shoot/instruction event. Participants need to bring their own camera, wide angle lens, tripod and supplies. Taught by Richard Haneline, $85 fee.
    A class on Learning the Basics of Medicare is also planned with date to be announced.
