Senior, junior are March PBIS Students of Month

■ Editor’s note: Chase County Schools staff in cooperation with its Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports team are nominating and selecting Students of the Month during the 2022-23 school year. Students of the Month are nominated by staff members based on positive qualities or actions teachers have observed that go above and beyond the usual expectations. The nominations are reviewed by the PBIS team and two students are picked based on the number of nominations and what was said by the nominators.
March Students of the Month are Raissa Nevarez and Jaret Peterson.
Nevarez is a senior and the  daughter of Sindia Nevarez and Javier Vizcaino. CCS elementary teacher Abigail Bauerle said this about Raissa, “Raissa shows what being respectful is by going out of her way to talk to me in the hall when most high school kids put their heads down and don’t acknowledge elementary teachers. I’m always greeted with a “Hello, Mrs. Bauerle!” Or “Have a great day.”
“In addition, Raissa attends multi-cultural meetings consistently and offers ideas to the group. She’s a go-getter and doesn’t hesitate when we ask her to help out. When I have an opportunity to be around her she lifts others spirits by giving them compliments. She has such a happy go-getter attitude,” Bauerle said.
CCS middle school teacher Marissa McDaniel added, “Raissa is a student who is always polite and cheerful. She always says hello and has a smile in the hallway. While subbing for a class she was in, she was very helpful in explaining what their routine is and where to find the work they need. I appreciate her positive attitude.”
And, finally, CCS school nurse Angie Paisley added, “Raissa is a very motivated and engaging young lady. I have really appreciated her organizational and ‘get it done’ attitude on the Red Cross School Blood Drive Team of which she has been a member since her sophomore year.
“I can always depend on her to do what she says she will do and have it done correctly. I also had the pleasure of being her instructor for the MPCC Certified Nursing Assistant class she took last summer. Her aspiration of becoming a registered nurse inspired her to work at the local hospital as a CNA and to apply for the UNMC/RHOP program.”
She was accepted into the RHOP program through UNMC/Chadron State College site which she will begin next fall, Paisley said, adding, “Her personality, intellect and ability to empathize will make her a valued member of any medical team in the future. She will go far in making this world a better place.”
Nevarez has participated in FCCLA, track and CYO.
The second Student of the Month is the first 2-time award recipient, junior Jaret Peterson. He is the son of Bruce and Crystal Peterson.
CCS media specialist and cheerleading sponsor Amanda Kimble said this about Jaret, “I know he has been student of the month before but...Jaret has been a constant spirit raiser all through the year and has shown appreciation and voiced appreciation when groups (such as cheerleading) have helped individually or teams as a whole. He shows maturity beyond his years.”
CCS math teacher Chris Bartels added, “No matter if he is on the field, on the mat or in the classroom, Jaret is always leading in a positive manner. He not only does the right things, but he encourages everyone around him to do so as well. The best part about Jaret is that he leads by example more than he does with his voice.”
CCS activities director Troy Hauxwell wrote, “Jaret is a great leader at Chase County Schools. I appreciate the way he treats other students and faculty. He is polite and acknowledges others in the hallways and during the school day. He is supportive of his teammates and is always encouraging them during competition.
“Jaret is a strong student with a 4.0 GPA and is able to manage his time well with the numerous activities he is involved with,” Hauxwell said.
Peterson has been a member of the football, wrestling and track teams, as well as the junior and senior legion baseball teams. He is a member of National Honor Society, FBLA and his church’s youth group.
