New $82,600 storage shed gets nod from CCS board

A new, 40 x 80-foot storage shed will be built near the Chase County Schools bus barn after a 9-0 vote last week from board members.
Supt. Adam Lambert said with the addition of more teachers next school year, items now stored in unused classrooms will have to come out since the classrooms will be used in 2021-22.
Generally, there was need for additional storage as well, he said at the May 11 board meeting.
Martin Building Systems, LLC of Madrid will construct the steel building at a cost of $82,601. The price includes three 12 x 12-foot overhead doors and a 3,200 sq. ft. floor of 6-inch concrete.
Four bids were received and Martin’s was the lowest, according to the discussion. It will be built southeast of the bus barn within the fenced area.
The price does not include dirt work, exterior concrete, insulation, plumbing, electrical or HVAC.
Members of the board’s building and grounds committee studied the purchase with Lambert.
Committee member Willy O’Neil said an additional storage building has been looked at for about six years.
During the discussion, some board members questioned if the storage building needed three overhead doors.
It is designed with one walk-in door, which some suggested be enlarged so a gator, as an example, could get through. Also suggested was a second walk-in door.
Nothing in the plans was officially changed at the meeting.
Items planned for storage in the new building include track equipment, items in the auditorium and other cold storage. Lambert said the new building will also eliminate the need for a storage shed the school now is renting.
Supt. Lambert said the goal is to have the building finished this year. Funds to pay for it will come out of the school’s depreciation fund, he said.
In a related area, the board approved completion of the new window installation project at the East 9th St. school building.
Started a couple years ago, the phased-in plan was set up to replace all of the original windows, a few at a time, in the main school building.
Ten window replacements were approved by the board last week, which will complete the replacement project. Spady Construction’s bid of $36,778.12 was approved.
Supt. Lambert said he believes the school can use some of its Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds received from the government for COVID-19 relief.
Two new busses ordered
At a special meeting May 11, the board approved buying  two 2022 Integrated CE S route busses from Cornhusker International Trucks in Lincoln.
Cost is $83,600 each or a total of $167,200. Each will seat 48.
Using a federal Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grant of $23,000 and about $20,000 from insurance, Supt. Lambert said that $43,000 will cover about half of one bus.
