FFA chapters gearing up for busy season

The FFA competitive season kicked off last week for Wauneta-Palisade and Imperial chapters with a Nov. 10 Career Development Event at NCTA in Curtis.
Imperial FFA placed first as a team in senior livestock judging, with all four team members in the top 15.
Jordan Jablonski finished second followed by Kathya Aragon, ninth; Jaiden Hill, 10th; and Peyton Dubas, 14th.
The junior livestock team placed fourth.
Peyton Owens led the team with a 10th place finish. Alex Johnson finished in 15th, Myla Brown 20th and Jason Nelson 23rd.
Imperial’s junior high team placed first, as well. Navy Havel and Tessa Smith were first and second, respectively, as individuals. Jayme Gittlein placed fourth and Ali Reeves was sixth to round out the team. Other individuals who placed were Anna Aragon, seventh; Odessa Zadina, eighth; and Dylan Heermann, 15th.
In agriscience, Imperial placed fifth as a team. Conner Tyerman earned a blue ribbon, Westyn Mendenhall a red ribbon and Carson Terryberry a white ribbon.
Imperial had the ninth place team in natural resources. Matalie Wallin finished with a team best blue ribbon and Brayan Cazares earned a white ribbon.
The WP chapter had 14 high school and 14 junior high members participate in livestock judging, as well as six individuals in natural resources and agriscience.
In her first year at WP, FFA Advisor Tana Engel said the event came up fast and makes her better prepared for another CDE Dec. 2.
Other schools taking part in the CDE last week were Dundy County Stratton, Hayes Center, Hitchcock County, Maywood, McCook, Bermis (Bertrand – Loomis), Cambridge, Cozad, Medicine Valley, Southwest, Elwood, Arapahoe, Lexington, Eustis-Farnam and Southern Valley.
WP has busy week
“We had a busy week,” Wauneta-Palisade FFA Advisor Engle said about the trips and activities her chapter took part in last week.
The evening after the CDE, 10 WP FFA members packed 41 boxes with 8,856 meals for Mercy Meals. Engel said the students enjoyed it.
On Friday eight members in animal science and ag leadership classes went to Kearney to hear Temple Grandin’s presentatoin “Understanding Animal Behavior.” Around 1,400 FFA and ag students attended the event.
Engel said the chapter is also selling fruit through Walgren’s, as well as chocolates, meat and cheese through 4 Seasons.
