Creative displays on view at CCS science fair

Twenty junior chemistry students displayed their research on a favorite topic May 18 at a Chase County Schools science fair.
Instructor Joni Kirwan coordinated the fair and lined up the three judges who selected six top displays is the CCS auxiliary gym.
In their tallying of points, the judges considered purpose, procedure, data/results, execution, creativity, organization and overall presentation.
The top point-getters included the following students in order of placing, with their entry description:
Colin O’Neil 1st: Built a heart rate monitor and tested heart rates of short, middle and long distance training (Title: Skip a Beat)
Madelynn Hanes 2nd: Tested oxygen levels of round-up ready beans (Title: Round-up Ready: True or False)
Ali McNair 3rd: Tested stain removers that contained bleach on blood stains (Title: Testing Bleach Agents)
Liz Reeves 4th: Tested cool down methods of athletic horses basing it off of their heart rates (Title: Hold your Horses)
Kayla Chavira 5th: Tested natural versus artificial fish food on goldfish, basing it off cleanliness, excrement and growth of the fish (Title: Natural vs. Artificial)
Jaiden Hill 6th: Tested the germination rate of small versus large seeds (Title: Does Seeds Size Matter)
Judges were Kim Wilson, retired CCS chemistry teacher; Marissa McDaniel, CCS 7-8 science teacher; and Nadine Bishop, Range Management Support Specialist in the Ag Conservation Experienced Service Program for USDA-NRCS.
As the top three place-winners, the science boards of O’Neil, Hanes and McNair will compete at the state fair, Kirwan said.
Sixth grade fair
CCS sixth graders also had a science fair for the first time, also on May 18,under the direction of science teacher Janet Sheaffer.
It is more a learning activity than a contest, Sheaffer said, but some of the boards will be sent to the state fair.
The science boards will be in the auxiliary gym throughout the day.
