CCS, WP artists awarded for entries at MCC contest

    Artists from 19 area high schools competed in McCook Community College’s annual paint in competition Friday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
    In addition, students entered artwork in the annual art competition. Three Chase County students placed for their art entries.
    Joee Clevenger, a CCS senior, placed second in the drawing category with her entry, “Duke.”
    WP students earned a pair of awards.
    Sophia Alfayo took third in the three-dimensional/sculpture division with “Bean Bag.”
    Ashton Wheeler took third in digital and photography with “Jack Wheeler.”
    Theirs were among the 280 pieces of art displayed in seven categories at the Wrightstone Fine Arts Gallery.
    McCook High School senior Ariana Pierson received best of show for her prisma color on panel piece titled “Asher.”
    This year’s paint-in involved teams from McCook, Southwest, Wallace, Medicine Valley, Chase County, Brady, Hitchcock County, Ogallala, Arnold, Norton Community, Dundy County, Perkins County, Lexington, Maywood, Southern Valley, Arapahoe, Decatur Community, Wauneta-Palisade and Cambridge.
    This year’s theme was “Invention, Industry, Progress” and was judged by North Platte Community College art instructor Richard Haneline.
    Teams had three hours to plan and create their art.
    Norton Community School’s Team No. 1 placed first, McCook’s Team No. 2 was second and Hitchcock County was third. Norton’s Team No. 2 received honorable mention.
