CCS speech team takes fourth at Wallace Invite

On Saturday, the Chase County Schools speech team competed in its second speech invite of the season at Wallace Public Schools.
Teams from South Platte, Perkins County, Southwest, Sutherland, Medicine Valley, Maxwell, Paxton, North Platte St. Pat’s, Elm Creek and Wallace also competed.
Speech Co-Coach Jill Bauerle was happy with the outcome.
“Our team was fourth overall. We missed third place by two points and this was out of the 11 teams,” she said, “so we’re off to a really good start.”
Thirteen out of the 22 students from the CCS team attended the invite, as some were at wrestling and cheerleading events.
“We should have even a bigger team next time we go to Grant,” Bauerle said.
Six out of the 12 entries from the Chase County team made finals.
Brayan Cazares took first in Serious Prose.
Aragorn Green secured first place in Poetry.
The team had two entries in Persuasive Speaking. Katelyn Stamm placed fifth and right behind her was Cazares in sixth.
Andrew Wiest and Paige Nickless both competed in Humorous Prose. Wiest placed second and Nickless placed fourth.
Co-coaches Bauerle and Alex Schilke hope to encourage more students to join speech.
“We are super excited, we’re trying to recruit even more,” said Bauerle, “We have a couple spots to fill.”
Updated schedule
Speech advisor Alex Schilke offered a few corrections to the upcoming schedule. The Perkins County meet will be Jan. 28 in Grant. Chase County will host SPVA Feb. 22. District Speech will be held Feb. 28 in Bridgeport.
