Lois Virginia West

Lois Virginia West, lifetime resident of Dundy County, died Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, McCook, Nebraska. She  was 102 years old.
Born Sept. 27, 1919, in rural Dundy County to Cloid and Edith (Burk) Lorance, the third of four girls. Lois attended Wauneta Schools, graduating in 1937 and went on to gain her teaching certificate and teach at local one room schools.
Lois married Arwyn West in 1945, at Stratton. After Arwyn was discharged from the army, they made their home on the farm. Lois worked long days alongside Arwyn, farming, ranching, milking cows and gathering eggs. Two sons, Franklin Arwyn and Garth Darwyn made the family complete. She lived by herself after Arwyns death in 1993 at the family farm until she was 100 years old.
Lois devoted her life to her husband and sons and later, her 6 grandchildren. She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardening. She canned beets and pickles to share at family dinners She made her own bread, treating the grandkids to buttered sugar toast upon request. Birthdays were sure to produce an angel food cake and she made the best fried chicken.
She was preceded in death by her parents Cloid and Edith Lorance; her husband Arwyn West; her daughter-in-law Kim West; her sisters and spouses, Erma (Kenneth) Kitt, Eunice (Bud) Crow and Margie (Junior) Kitt-Shackelford; her in-laws and spouses, Lois (Richard) May, Melba (Warren) Richter, Rawleyce (Danny) Rife, Mary Ellen (Bob) Dahnke and Ron (Julie) West.
Lois is survived by sons Frank (Angie) West of Wauneta and Garth West of Stratton; grandchildren Casey (Kristi) Haarberg of Castle Pines, Colorado, Montana (Zack) Ringer of Chappell, Jesse West of Wauneta, Nevada (Jason) Lytle of Culbertson, Myles (Laura) West of Wauneta, Reese (Dakota) West of Wauneta; and great grandchildren Colten, Riatta and Sedar Ringer, Bailey West, Kashlyn Castillo, Milly, Milo and Myers West, Aiden and Oaklyn Lytle
Memorial Services will be at the Wauneta Community Center in Wauneta on July 15, 2022, at 3 p.m. (MDT), with Pastor Gary Hunt Officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Lois name to the Stratton Rural Fire Department, Dundy County Rural Fire Department or the Wauneta Rural Fire Department.
