Howard Albert Welsh was born Dec. 6, 1927, in Ogallala, Nebraska, to James and Maude Welsh. He attended country school west of Brule. Howard graduated from Ogallala High School in 1945. After high school he served in the US Navy as Seaman 1st Class from March 1946 - December 1947. His military tour was Navy-Air Station Spain.
Upon return from the military, he was engaged to Jeanie Schmitt and they were united in marriage on Sept. 28, 1948, in Grant. The couple lived on a farm north of Brule and in the spring of 1949, they moved southeast of Brandon, to the Schmitt Ranch. They resided on the ranch and raised five children.
In 1969 they moved to Imperial and built the Goldenwest Motel. They were in business until retirement but stayed in Imperial.
Howard was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Imperial and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spring turkey hunting, sitting in on Chase County Court proceedings, and visits from family and friends.
Howard passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home, Imperial. Howard was 95 years of age.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jeanie; brother Dean; sister Roberta Frosh; stepsisters Carol Borowski and Verna Mae Muhr; great-granddaughter Darlynn Kemling; and son-in-law Pat Fought
Howard is survived by his sister Marlene Hinkle and her husband Dwaine of Sun Lakes, Arizona; daughters Elizabeth Bayless and husband, Dan, of Bridgeport, Kathy Fought of San Marcos, California, Star Kemling and husband, Jim, of Grant and Jayne Splitt and husband, Rex, of Littleton, Colorado; son, Kim Welsh and wife, Kim Renee, of Peyton, Colorado; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, 10:30 a.m. (MT) at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Imperial, with Father Lothar Gilde celebrant. Interment (with full military honors) will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 13, 2-6 p.m. (MT) at Liewer Funeral Home, Imperial.
A memorial, in Howard’s memory, has been suggested to the Welsh Family, for a future designation.
