Charles Edwin Nichols passed away at the Wauneta Care and Therapy Center on May 28, 2023. He was 90 years of age.
Charles was born in Wauneta, Nebraska, on Feb. 23, 1933, to Fern and Violet (Ellison) of Wauneta. Charles attended a country school south of Wauneta then later attended school in Wauneta. Charles finished high School. After graduating, Charles joined the US Navy and served in the Korean War. Upon returning, he married Donna Jean Carter on June 18, 1954. They settled south of Wauneta known today as the Nichols Cattle Ranch. They welcomed three sons, Terry in 1957, followed by Kelly in 1958 and Mike in 1964.
Charles spent his life as a rancher/ farmer. Charles was on several boards to serve the community of which he was so proud. His hobbies included spending time with family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charles’ other hobbies were cattle, horses, hunting, fishing and collecting old tractors to rebuild.
Charles was preceded in death by his father Fern; mother Violet; and grandparents, Charlie and Maude Nichols and Ed and Stella (Rowley) Ellison.
Survivors left to celebrate his life are his wife Donna Nichols of Wauneta; sons Terry and wife Cindy of Ogallala, Kelly and wife Tawnia of Max and Mike Nichols of Wauneta.
Grandsons Justin and wife Stacy of Benkelman, Theron Nichols and wife Nikki of North Platte, Brandon Nichols of Atlanta, Georgia, Chase Nichols and wife Jamie of Red Cloud and Cody Nichols and wife Jayna of North Platte.
Great-grandchildren Cord and Joann Nichols of Red Cloud, Cauy and Carver Nichols of North Platte, Mayson Sandman of Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California, Atticus, Fenton and Violet Nichols of Benkelman.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3, 2023, 2 p.m. (MT) at the United Methodist Church of Wauneta, with Rev. Janie Freeland and Rev. Gary Hunt officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta with full military honors.
Visitation was held Saturday, June 3, 2023, 10-11:30 a.m. (MT) at Liewer Funeral Home, Wauneta.
A memorial in Charles’ memory has been suggested to the Wauneta Nebraska EMS.
