Wauneta man wanted for Champion area burglaries

    The Chase County Sheriff’s Office said a Wauneta resident jailed in Kansas is a suspect in several burglaries in the Champion area.
    Chase County Deputy Rob Browning said Shawn Mayberry, 24, who had been living in Wauneta for two or three months, is in jail in Trego County, Kansas on unrelated charges of felony burglary and misdemeanor theft of property.
    Also jailed with Mayberry is Zachary Mandrell, 23, an acquaintance of Mayberry’s who was in this area seeking work, Browning said.
    Chase County arrest warrants were sworn out June 12 for the two men on three counts of felony burglary, three counts of theft by unlawful taking, also a felony, and one count of possession of burglar’s tools.
    The Chase County warrants are in connection with burglaries of at least three properties near Champion between June 8-10, Browning said.
    Acting on a tip from Trego County officials, Chase County deputies searched Mayberry’s residence June 11 and found stolen items, he said.
    More charges are possible.
    “We’re still getting phone calls,” Browning said. “Right now we have them at three different burglaries in the Champion area, mostly farmsteads, rural shops, that type of stuff.”
    The two men remain in the Trego County Jail on $50,000 bail. If they are released, Chase County officials will jail them here, where bail has been set at $100,000, Browning said.
