Visitors keep commissioners on toes

Visitors to the May 28 Chase County Commissioners’ meeting covered a wide variety of topics.
Bob and Gale Kohl were on hand to request the commissioners reconsider hiring a road superintendent.
Commissioners Jacci Brown and Dennis Kunnemann included hiring a road superintendent as part of their platforms last year when running for commissioner.
Their plan had been to reduce commissioners’ salaries to fund the position. But at the Dec. 26, 2017 meeting, the commissioners passed a resolution setting salaries for the clerk, assessor, treasurer, sheriff, surveyor, commissioners and attorney for 2019 to 2022. The board will have to wait until salary discussions come in 2021 to debate decreasing the commissioners’ salaries to pay for a road superintendent’s salary.
Kohl felt each commissioner manages their district differently resulting in inequality.
He also said graders should not be out after dark, but commissioners said that’s the time of least traffic on the Imperial Beef road.
Officials with Mid-Plains Community College returned to ask the county for a donation toward MPCC Imperial’s expansion project.
Commissioners originally pledged to support the project in 2018. A deeper look at the county’s budget led the group to change its mind last August.
With the project expected to cost $1,200,000, college officials would like to secure 80% before work begins.
No decision was made at the meeting.
