The current medical student at Chase County Community Hospital/clinics comes from Red Rocks Community College in Denver, Colorado.
Breeann Backer is a second  year student training to become a physician’s assistant (PA).
“A PA career can give me great lateral mobility and more opportunities to form relationships in the community,” Backer said.
She said she has worked in several rural medical facilities and loves it.
She loves the rural experiences because they make her feel more like being a part of the community.
“Coming here I have had the best welcoming of anywhere I have been. I feel spoiled,” Backer said.
She is enjoying her time at the Chase County medical facilities because she is experiencing a variety of different areas, she said.
Rural area hospitals and clinics provide chances to form relationships and a rapport with patients—to form  a connection, she said.
“This is especially true in the area of geriatrics. I love geriatrics and finding out about the patients’ living conditions, medical needs, what they are passionate about and pursuing better health for each patient,” Backer said.
She is also fond of cardiology.
“I think it is great being involved in so many areas here with everyone being so helpful,” she added.
Backer was born in Hawaii and grew up in South Dakota and Montana before moving to Denver to attend school.
She is the oldest of three girls and engaged to be married.
“We are planning our wedding on New Year’s Eve. Depending on COVID, it will be the most awesome party ever—or not,” she said.
When time allows from her studies and work, Backer and her fiance enjoy the outdoors.
“We love to go camping, hiking and boating. I’m so grateful we can do what we love and spend time at the lake with everything that is going on,” she said.
Backer also enjoys photography as her “special hobby,” she said.
Her favorite photo subject is people.
