Veterans Memorial impressive addition to courthouse lawn

Long-awaited statue is finally in place

The Chase County Veterans Memorial bronze statue and benches were put in place last Friday.
Ryan Greene of Imperial Contracting and others were on hand to position the statue and permanently secure it. The six benches were also placed.
Concrete work for the sidewalks and statue foundation, lighting, sprinkler placement and cinder block wall, which will be the foundational support for the veteran’s memorial bricks, were completed several weeks ago.
The bronze statue of a kneeling soldier with hands folded in prayer was designed and sculpted by artist Fred Hoppe of Columbus.
Six iron benches were made by Bob Thomas and painted in patriotic red, white and blue colors.
Each individual bench bears an emblem for each branch of the military plus a plaque with the name of the donor who purchased it.
All six benches have been purchased with funds going toward the cost of the memorial.
Memorial bricks honoring  veterans with their name and other engraved information are still available for purchase at a cost of $200 each.
Bricks will be available for purchase as time goes on, said veteran Bud Statz.
“So far, 190 bricks have been purchased. We are receiving the engraved bricks 20 at a time to minimize shipping costs,” he said.
Statz said they have received 70 engraved bricks with more coming.
The bricks will eventually be placed on the block foundation to form a wall around the back of the memorial site.
