Valuations model concerns brought to Chase County Commissioners

The Chase County Commissioners had two visitors during open forum on June 23.
Tom Luhrs attended the open forum to encourage County Assessor Dotty Bartels to reevaluate the model used for valuations of Imperial’s Sage Addition.
Luhrs said there was no rhyme or reason to how valuations changed in 2020 and highlighted houses in the Sage Addition using comparable houses in western Nebraska.
The commissioners discussed contacting Brian Hill and Sarah Scott with the Nebraska Department of Revenue for their opinions.
Madison Linton with Viaero requested a letter of support from the county to help the company provide fiber internet service to Champion through the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s Rural Broadband Remote Access Grant.
Great Plains Communications provides internet service to a small part of Champion.
The grant was announced three weeks ago and Linton apologized for the fast turnaround.
Since it wasn’t on the agenda, the commissioners will meet today (Thursday) to approve the letter.
Jeff Tidyman and Brad Foote joined the meeting to confirm plans to pave Road 749 from Highway 61 to Foote’s Imperial Beef feedlot, north of Imperial.
Foote will pay for 25% of the $800,000, 6,600-feet project to the west entrance of Imperial Beef. If he decides he’d like the road paved to the east entrance, Foote will pay 100% of the cost for paving between the two.
The State of Nebraska plans on setting up an asphalt plant at Wellfleet in August. Ideally, work on the road will begin at the end of August or early September before harvest starts. If any delays occur, work on the road will be delayed, as well.
Commissioners have estimated paving the road will save the county $50,000 a year.
