Time to salute fallen heroes

Thunderstorms took a break Monday long enough for the Memorial Day ceremony at Mount Hope Cemetery. Representatives of Andrew Kinder VFW Post #4688 presented the colors to open the ceremony. Following a prayer and a reading by Post Commander Eldon Kuntzelman, Phil Harris, interim minister at Crossroads Wesleyen Church, middle, shared his thoughts on the meaning and importance of Memorial Day. Joining VFW members, above, for the 21-gun salute was Steve Browning, second from left, a 1978 Chase County High School graduate, who was home for his 40-year reunion. A military veteran after serving 28 years, he is a helicopter pilot with the New York police department. Many, like Donita Pribbeno below, took time to visit the colorfully decorated graves. The full text of Harris’ address is reprinted in his Speaking of Faith column on page A5. (Johnson Publications photos)
