Still need Christmas ideas? Chase County history might be answer

It’s less than two weeks until Christmas, and you still have some gifts to buy.
Why not consider a gift of history, specifically Chase County history?
The Chase County Historical Society’s 2018 calendar debuted mid-September at the organization’s annual meeting, but many still looking for gifting ideas are finding it will make a memorable Christmas gift, too.
Historical Society President Charley Colton hopes so. He and fellow board member Becky Carman spent countless hours planning for the group’s second calendar.
The 2018 edition focuses on ranches and farmsteads in Chase County after featuring main streets of Chase County towns on the pages of the first-ever 2017 calendar.
Colton said farmsteads were an easy choice for the monthly calendar photographs this time because there was such a good selection in the museum files.
“As I was going through the files and folders, I came across several good ones,” he said.
Many of the farmstead and ranch photographs were donated to the museum, he said, and are an important piece of county history.
The month of June is a good example, he said, which features the Otto Luhrs farm, 10 miles east of Imperial.
The farm, which still remains in the family, included 1,600 acres at the time. The calendar page reads: “Luhrs raised 4,000 bushel corn and 7,000 bushel wheat in 1914.”
Those were pretty good yields at the time, Colton said.
Another interesting historical photo is featured in May, which shows the farmstead residence of E.A. Tibbetts, located on the South Divide.
