Skatepark moves closer to completion

The Imperial Skatepark construction is making progress.
The Artisan Skateparks crew from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina has been going to work at 5 a.m. to get a jump on the warm weather.
Durand Deasley of Artisan Skateparks said he is fairly confident they could have all the concrete poured by June 10, and completion of the skatepark should not be far behind.
“Yesterday (last Thursday), city employees showed up and started cleaning up the area around the construction site. It was really a surprise,” said Johnathan Underwood of Artisan Skateparks.
City employees picked up scraps of wood, trash and chunks of concrete around the site.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said with a smile.
Some of the members of Team Hot Wheels have been bringing the crew lemonade.
Jo Leyland, City Clerk/Administrator, said Trevin Moreno, the originator of the skatepark dream, voluntarily came to work two days in a row at 5 a.m. with the rest of the crew.
Underwood taught him how to trowel the concrete after it was poured.
Moreno also helped with anything that needed done around the site, including hauling concrete in a wheelbarrow, Leyland said.
Justin Gorman, another crew member with Artisan Skateparks, said everything has been going smoothly.
“It’s really nice here. I like it. It’s quiet here, and people are nice,” Gorman said.
Artisan Skateparks donated some extra design elements to the park, said Leyland, and the Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado Railway, LLC (NKCR) also donated a 16-foot rail to be integrated into the skatepark design, she added.
The goal is to have the skatepark completed before Smokin’ on Broadway June 23.
