School nurse: parents need to know measles not eradicated

While the vast majority of parents get their children the required immunizations, there are some who do not.
With measles cases reported in New York, Washington and Texas this year, Angie Paisley, R.N., nurse at Chase County Schools, wants parents to know that immunizations are important, even in Chase County.
And they are safe, she said.
An article last week in the New York Times caught Paisley’s eye, and she believes it contains some very good information all residents should know.
Most importantly—that measles is not eradicated as many may believe. The five outbreaks in the U.S. this year are proof of that, she said.
And measles still kills. According to the article, the virus killed 110,000 people globally in 2017, most of them children under age five.
Most American cases since 2000 have been the result of people traveling to or from countries where measles is a problem due to little vaccination, reads the Times article.
With so many people traveling to other countries these days, Paisley said that’s especially concerning here, too.
