Rice wins blue at state fair

Laura Rice’s quilts are regular winners at the Chase County Fair, but she also earned recognition at the state level.
The quilts Rice received awards for at the state fair this year are winners from the 2018 Chase County Fair.
“Our fair runs a little late,” Rice said. “They want the quilts up there a week before our fair happens.”
Rice is a regular winner at the Chase County Fair for quilts, with 2019 being her fourth year chosen as the Best of County for her quilting work.
Rice also took Best of County this year in the textile arts division with an embroidered table cloth. Both pieces will be shown at the 2020 Nebraska State Fair.
At this year’s state fair, Rice came home with multiple ribbons, including:
First place—Art-type quilt, any size (Brilliant Beauties of Joy pattern)
First place—hand-pieced bed quilt (Majestic Mosaic pattern)
First place—Best in County Contest (Majestic Mosaic pattern)
While at the state fair’s quilter presentation, Rice spoke with judges and other quilt enthusiasts.
“This little old lady wanted to speak with me,” she said. “She took my hands and said ‘I just want to thank you for hand quilting,’ I told her it’s a passion.”
