With no Husker sports so far this fall, more light poles decorated like this one last year may again be seen. A 2020 light pole contest got the OK Monday.

Popularity last year bringing back downtown pole decorating contest

    It was a big hit last fall, and that’s why city officials are bringing back the downtown pole decorating contest for another year.
    And there’s another draw this year—the prize money has been increased.
    At Monday’s council meeting, action was taken to approve $500 in prize money to be paid out of the city’s administrative fund. Last year, donations funded $400 in prizes when 37 poles were decorated.
    Decorators will have about a month from now to finish their creations on a pre-selected Imperial light pole along Broadway.
    Community Development Director Tyler Pribbeno said hay bales, corn stalks, fall decor, scarecrows, pumpkins and anything with a fall or harvest-related theme can be used in the decorating.
    Since the pole decorations will remain up until Nov. 30, Pribbeno encouraged participants not to use Halloween themes.
