Police department is upgrading computers, records management
The Imperial Police Department is going high tech.
At Monday’s city council meeting, unanimous approval was given to provide up to $30,000 from city sales tax funds (community development) to fund the new CRIMES software, four new Dell laptops, scanners/printers for each police vehicle and the first year of the annual maintenance fee.
Police Chief Ryan Wisnieski and Sgt. Chad Ostmeyer addressed the council on the new equipment and software.
The new records management system will be entirely web-based, they said, replacing the paper system now in use. The system will catalog evidence, with storage kept off site.
Regarding issuing of citations, they will no longer be hand-written, Ostmeyer said. If a ticket is to be issued, the individual’s license and registration will be scanned with that info transferred to an E-citation printout. That information can then be sent directly to the county attorney’s office at the end of each officer’s shift.
It will also calculate the send information to the state, they said.
“This will cut time considerably on traffic stops,” Ostmeyer said.
Chief Wisnieski said they hoped to have the system switched over in a month or so. Technicians are still studying whether the police department’s old records can be transferred to the new system.
If not, Wisnieski said the old records will be kept on a separate data base.
In a related area, Robert Rusk, who recently graduated from the Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, received a pay raise to $40,000 up from his starting salary of $32,500. Rusk was hired in February.

In other action Monday, the council rescinded two nuisance properties formerly on the list as the areas of concern have been cleaned up and they are now in compliance. Two others were added as nuisances.
