Older soccer teams get okay to use school field for matches

At a park board meeting March 7, school officials okayed use of the Chase County Schools’ football practice field at the East 9th St., site for older teams’ soccer matches this spring.
The topic was discussed the day before at a March 6 city council meeting, as well, when finding a location for junior high and high school soccer matches was also on the agenda.
The two older soccer divisions (junior high and high school) previously competed at the Wellington field, owned by the school. However, with CCS planning to eventually sell the property, the field had not been maintained as regularly as it had the past year, according to discussion at the council meeting.
City officials said last week the Wellington field is unusable for soccer. And, the outfield at Campbell Park is not large enough for matches, Council member Doug Gaswick said.
The city of Imperial manages the Imperial soccer program  which, as of last week, had about 250 youths enrolled, said Gaswick, who is the council’s liaison to the park board.
Of that number, about 50 compete on the two older teams, he said.
“It’s a big program and involves lots of kids,” he said. “It’s a benefit to the community.”
The younger soccer age divisions use the outfields at Schroeder Park for their practices and matches.
City Clerk/Administrator Jo Leyland said the park board last week also discussed working on finding a permanent soccer field location for the future.
