Neighbors Helping Neighbors: The Lasting Legacy of Imperial’s Giving Circle

For nearly two decades, a quiet but powerful force of generosity has been moving through the streets of Imperial. While many residents have heard of The Giving Circle, few may realize that this local powerhouse of philanthropy has been transforming lives one monthly meeting at a time since May 2008.
The group was originally the brainchild of former Community Development Director Leslie Carlholm. Her vision was simple: gather a group of local philanthropists to support individuals, bolster community projects, and make a tangible difference right here at home.
Today, that vision remains unchanged. The Giving Circle operates with an informal, welcoming spirit. Members meet monthly, each bringing a suggested donation of $25.00 and—more importantly—ideas for who needs a helping hand.
The impact of these individual donations grew significantly in 2014 with the birth of the Mayor’s Charity Poker Run. Initiated by former Mayor Dwight Coleman and championed today by Mayor Craig Loeffler, the event has become a vital lifeline for the group.
Giving Circle members don’t just receive the funds; they roll up their sleeves to help with registrations and prepare a hearty meal for the bikers. Every dollar raised from the run goes directly into the Circle’s fund, allowing the group to say “yes” to more requests than ever before.
When asked what she enjoys about Giving Circle, charter member Dianne Way says, “Giving Circle has been such a rewarding group to be involved with.  By pooling small amounts from all members, we are able to help in so many ways.  Just letting those recipients know that someone cares and is thinking of them is felt in the heartfelt thanks we receive back.”
The scope of the Giving Circle’s reach is as diverse as the community itself. Over the years, they have provided:
• Medical Support: Gas cards for those traveling for medical treatments and funds for families experiencing devastating situations.
• Family Essentials: Food for hungry families and car seats for newborns.
• Education & Arts: Books for local college students and improvements for our parks and theater.
• Emergency Relief: Assistance with utility bills for neighbors facing a difficult season.
To date, over $79,000 has been donated to local people and projects.  While the financial aid is vital, the true goal of the Giving Circle is more than just a check. It’s about letting the recipient know that their community cares for them.  It is a message of solidarity that transcends the dollar amount on the check.
