More scams affecting local residents

Things can be easy in the age of technology, but it can also be scary.
A Wauneta man fell for a scam in recent weeks. The scammer told the man his grandson was in jail and needed cash to get him out.
The man sent $20,000 from Prairie States Communication, a FedEx pickup location in Imperial.
The scammer said to use Prairie States to send the money, possibly because FedEx has fewer inspection stipulations than UPS.
Another woman in town went to Owens’ True Value to send a package by UPS overnight, since FedEx at Prairie States had already gone out that day. UPS has the right to open the package. Finding it was cash, they returned it to the sender
From Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, there were four scam-related calls reported to the Chase County Sheriff’s Department.
