Mark Bottom halfway to goal on Pedal for Pat

    The fundraiser to sponsor Mark Bottom as a Summitt Cyclist on the Pedal for Pat Team is on target, according to Bottom.
    As of Friday, the first half of the goal to raise $5,000 was reached, he said. There is one month to raise the second half, as it will be open for donations until the end of October.
    Bottom said the school staff, students and community, combined with family and friends, have been very supportive and generous. Students have been helping sell raffle tickets at home sporting events for several gift baskets, which were made by the elementary students.
    Students are also collecting dimes to fill bottles to contribute to the fundraiser, he added.
    Bottom said that his training is going very well. He is averaging about 200 miles a week. The weather recently has made it necessary to use the inside trainer more, “but that’s ok,” he said.
    He had a strong ride up Rabbit Ears Pass at Steamboat Springs last weekend. It was a relentless ride, he said, but he felt he had good volume and quality riding.
    “I feel good,” Bottom said, “I am on track.”
    Bottom is one of 11 riders training for the cross-country, 1,098-mile cycling fundraiser Oct. 17-28. There was a possibility that the end of the route would have to be changed because of Hurricane Irma, Bottom said. But it’s okay now, he commented. The route will remain the same, beginning in Knoxville, Tenn. and ending in Key West, Fla., as originally planned.
    He said the cyclists all stay in communication with each other to exchange status reports and encourage each other. He added that all the cyclists are doing very well with their training.
