Local woman doesn’t fall for scam; police continue to urge vigilance

While it’s uncertain how much she might have lost, Sheryl Curtis of Imperial was smart enough to know the signs of a probable scam last week.
And, as Imperial police learned of the scam attempt last Thursday, officers continue to urge vigilance among local residents for attempted scams like this one.
Curtis said she received a text message on her cell phone from “Amazon Support,” notifying her of a $175.65 debit on her Amazon Visa card, and asked her to call a phone number if she disputed the purchase.
The purchase involved electronics bought in Ohio.
Since she didn’t make the purchase, Curtis said she called the number, and the person she talked to “sounded legitimate.”
However, when that person asked Curtis for her address and then wanted her to go to the Imperial Dollar General Store to “confirm her ID,” Curtis hung up the phone.
She then called both the credit card company, as well as Amazon, and discovered no charges of $175.65 in Ohio had been made on her Amazon card.
She forwarded the text information to both the credit card company and Amazon as requested.
