Local food banks holding their own

    Emergency food pantries in this area appear to be in good shape, even as pantries nationwide—and, as close as Omaha—are beset by a combination of less food donated, higher demand from the newly unemployed and a shortage of volunteers.
    In fact, the Chase County Food Pantry in Imperial is “doing really good right now,” said President Nancy Terryberry.
    A recent cruise night in Imperial  brought in both food and money, but
Terryberry isn’t depending on that to last.
    “I’m sure [demand] will hit,” she said, although she can’t predict when.
    The Chase County Pantry, which is headquartered in the city office complex, isn’t staffed at the moment as it usually is two days a week. But anyone needing food can call Terryberry at 308-882-8019, and workers at the city office also can distribute food.
    For now, “most of the stuff is stocked up again,” she said. “Once they start coming again, it’ll go like nothing.”
    At other area food pantries, business has been a bit more steady.
