Lions among local groups keeping roadways clean

April is one of the normal months service groups are out picking up trash along Nebraska’s roadways as part of the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway program. With the extended winter in this area, last weekend was really the first good day for the roadside work, although groups like the Imperial Lions Club battled fierce wind to complete their section of highway west of Imperial. Above, Lions members Nate Jenkins, left, and Miles Colson fight the wind as they fill their bags along the south side of Highway 6. They were among six other Lions members on the two-mile stretch of highway. Nebraska’s Adopt-a-Highway program officially began in April 1990, through the efforts of Gretna State Senator Emil Beyer. It has grown to cover about one-quarter of the state’s 10,000 miles of roads and currently 900 groups have adopted a section of Nebraska roadsides as their own. Normally, groups pick up trash on their designated section of road twice a year. (Johnson Publications photo)
