Law enforcement agreement back in place between city, sheriff’s office

Imperial police officers will once again assist the Chase County Sheriff’s Office on calls outside the city limits if requested to do so.
After the county commissioners voted April 14 to reinstate the agreement, city council members did the same Monday night.
After originally signing an agreement in 2013, it was dissolved July 1, 2017 after relations between the two departments became strained.
Imperial Police Chief Ryan Wisnieski said he approached Sheriff Kevin Mueller about putting it back in place, after Wisnieski visited with Mayor Dwight Coleman.
“And, he agreed,” Wisnieski said of the mayor.
In recent weeks, the city police assisted the sheriff’s office with both a stolen vehicle case and a high-speed pursuit.
Wisnieski said he suggested the agreement be back in place “to make sure my guys are protected and that our insurance isn’t going to be upset at us if we go on and assist.”
To put it back in force, both city and county elected officials had to approve it, with signatures also on the agreement from the police chief and sheriff.
According to the agreement, city police officers will be “deputized” by the sheriff and provide that assistance only when requested. When doing so, the police officers will have the authority “to assist the public, make arrests and enforce the laws of the state of Nebraska.”
