Lamar church featured this month on 2020 historical society calendar

Memories are stirred for Lamar’s Stan Cross

Stan Cross comes from a long family line of Lamar residents.

This month, he wanted to share memories of the historical church building in Lamar since it’s the March featured church on the 2020 Chase County Historical Society Calendar.

Some stories are from when he attended the church as a child, and others were passed down to him or recorded.

The Lamar church was the first church built in the village by the Presbyterians in 1888 who were early pioneers in the area.

Services were held there for some years until the pioneers began to leave the community when construction of the railroad tracks came to a halt because of drought and the depression.

Before the church could be sold as a barn, Mrs. Ellen C. Bailey bought it in 1903 and began holding Sunday school to a few attendees.
