Kuenne, Prottsman concoct winning Iron Skillet entries

Eight local food lovers competed in this year’s Iron Skillet contest Saturday afternoon at Smokin’ on Broadway.
Coming out on top were Diane Kuenne in appetizers and Barb Prottsman in desserts.
Both Imperial women have competed each year the contest has been held.
A total of four competed in the dessert division, while five entered the appetizers class.
Each year, coordinator Carolyn Lee has come up with the three “secret” ingredients that chefs must use in their entries. Any other ingredients can be added to their creations.
This year, the “secret” ingredients were red potatoes, raisins and avocados for appetizer entries, and rice, pineapple bits and jalapenos for the desserts.
Each contestant described their entries as the judges were adding up their scores. Many said the raisins provided a particular challenge for them in the appetizer division.
