Johnsons dominate chili cook-off

The Imperial Chamber of Commerce’s 9th annual chili cook-off March 12 ended up being a family affair, with the Johnsons taking first, second and third place.

Of the 13 contestants, Clint Johnson again took first place with his recipe.

Johnson received $50 in Chamber Bucks and a first-place tumbler.

Johnson’s nieces, Jasmine and Keylee Johnson, took second and third places, respectively.

They also received tumblers, as well as $25 and $15 in Chamber Bucks.

Luis Rodriguez took home the coveted People’s Choice Award apron for his smoked chili. This year’s apron represents Rodriguez’s third People’s Choice win.

Judges for the contest included Johnny Miller, Jason Francis, Eric Exum, Justin Owings and Jody Fenwick

Chamber President Jack Schnieder said there were eight contestants signed up when they arrived for the contest to set up, “and five more just showed up.”

“We were really happy for that,” he said.
