Imperial Skatepark grand opening scheduled for Saturday

The Imperial Skatepark grand opening is set for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. along West 6th Street in Campbell Park.
This event will be a local celebration, said Jo Leyland, City Clerk/Administrator. Speakers are scheduled along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“Anyone who has skateboards, scooters, skates or bikes without pegs are welcome to join the celebration and use the new skatepark Saturday,” Leyland said.
The Artisan Skateparks’ crew will also be present for Saturday’s event.
There is a possibility some finish work might need done on Sunday before the crew leaves. The skatepark would be temporarily closed in that case, she added.
“We will have a park that rivals any other park in the area, especially small communities,” Leyland said.
Evolution of project
The project started in 2016 when nine-year-old Trevin Moreno had a dream. He wanted a skatepark in his community and started a lemonade stand to raise funds.
Other youths in his age group joined him and dubbed themselves Team Hot Wheels. Together, they expanded the venture with a traveling lemonade and treat sale at businesses in October 2016. By December, they had raised $1,000.
