Hot day, cool water greets swimmers on first day

On Tuesday, 97-degree temperatures brought out the maximum number allowed in the Imperial pool on opening day. In the era of COVID-19 and Directed Health Measures (DHMs) from the Governor, 33 swimmers can be in the water and/or on the deck at one time. Swimming is being divided into two afternoon sessions to allow more people to take advantage of the pool, said Manager Brooklyn Christensen. A second session is held from 3:15 to 5 p.m. for a new group of swimmers. That was reached quickly, too, Christensen said, but the late session didn’t last long. The pool had to close within minutes of reaching the 33 number due to high winds that caused visibility issues seeing the bottom of the pool, Christensen said. Two extra “floater” lifeguards are working each session to make sure the COVID-19 rules are followed. The pool is open Monday through Friday 1-5 p.m., with night swimming from 7-9 p.m. The pool is closed weekends.
