Fun, safe event touted for BRAN’s 38th year

For the 38th consecutive year, Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) is offering bicyclists the opportunity to take part in a week-long bike ride in celebration of Nebraska’s scenic beauty.
Imperial will serve as host for the ride’s first overnight stop on Sunday, June 3. The ride will wrap up in Ashland June 9.
A five-member Imperial committee will be meeting with BRAN representatives when they visit here next Tuesday.
Committee Chair Chris Lee said next week’s meeting will provide an opportunity for the local organizers and the BRAN reps to meet and compare notes.
It will also be chance to get some questions answered from both sides, he said.
Since Imperial was announced as a BRAN overnight stop late last year, Lee said he has secured permission from Chase County Schools administration for the bicyclists to camp overnight at the school’s football field.
Lee said more plans for the time BRAN riders are here will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the big benefits besides the chance to put Imperial in the spotlight while BRAN is here are the scholarships for local students.
BRAN uses all profits from its ride to provide scholarships to high school seniors from the host communities to attend Nebraska trade schools, colleges and universities. There are no paid employees with BRAN and it is run completely by volunteers who use personal vacation to work for the week on BRAN.
BRAN currently awards $30,000 annually to students selected from the host communities’ schools with the only qualifier that those students attend a Nebraska school.
The theme of this year’s BRAN is “A Southern State of Mind.”
