During the UNL Extension’s Healthy Habits Food and Nutrition Day in Imperial, one of the groups followed a salsa-making session with exercise outdoors using a “thumb ball.”

Food, nutrition day provides students with healthy hands-on examples

The goal of the Healthy Habits Food and Nutrition Day is to teach fifth and sixth grade students how to make healthy food choices and be physically active.
The University of Nebraska Extension Office encourages eating healthy and being active as a family as it is equally important for children and adults of all ages.
Imperial hosted the Healthy Habits Food Day for Chase County Schools’ (CCS) fifth and sixth graders and one home schooled youth Jan. 29 at the Chase County fairgrounds.
Extension Educator Debbie Kuenning headed the event.
Attendees were divided into five color-coded groups who each attended five different sessions during the event.
Youths learned about making good choices through hands-on activities and research-based education, she said.
This year, walking tacos were on the menu for lunchtime.
Several stations prepared different parts of the lunch within their group that was incorporated into the noon meal, Kuenning said.
During the sessions, each group also had the opportunity to become educated on other areas of food preparation and safety in the kitchen, including the importance of proper hand washing and tasting what they made.
