Financing set for school bus barn

Construction and maintenance issues took up much of Tuesday’s Chase County Schools board of education meeting.
At the top of the discussion was financing for the new bus barn that will be built this year on the East 9th Street school grounds, northwest of the building.
Last month, at a special meeting, board members approved the low bid of $565,850 for construction of a 70 x 113-foot bus barn from C & S Construction of Madrid.
On a unanimous vote Tuesday, board members approved financing through First Bank & Trust in Imperial with loan funds of up to $565,075.
Supt. Joey Lefdal said Wednesday it’s possible all of that loan may not be necessary. There may be funds unused from the 2016-17 budget, and funds from the sale of the Wellington property that could go toward the bus barn building’s cost, he said.
There is no prepayment penalty in the 20-year loan agreement with the bank, he said.
Lefdal had also secured loan financing proposals from Pinnacle Bank and Adams Bank & Trust, both of which he said were “very comparable” with just a $400 difference between high and low on the payments and a $350 difference on the interest rates.
The First Bank & Trust proposal had the lowest overall cost to the district.
C & S Construction hopes to begin dirt work prior to the start of school, Lefdal said. While it’s not certain, he said they have discussed having enough dirt work done so busses can be parked there when the 2017-18 school year begins.
New gym addition
The board spent some time discussing the new gym and wrestling room built on the northeast side of the school building.
While it was substantially complete on June 6, Lefdal said he is not happy with where the project is at now that it’s mid-July.
There has been an extensive delay on hanging the basketball hoops, which is still not done. However, Lefdal said Wednesday the subcontractor on that indicated he’d be starting this week.
Also to be finished is the hanging of the wall mats in the adjoining wresting room area.
