Enders site for burn training March 14

Several agencies and the Imperial and Wauneta Volunteer Fire Departments are gearing up for a major live fire training exercise/prescribed burn at Enders Lake State Recreation Area (SRA) next Saturday, March 14.
According to planners, the scope of the project is to burn large parcels of grassland to accomplish fuels reduction.
At the same time, it will serve as a training event for area fire department and fire response agencies.
A press release to area news outlets stated the event will expose participants to a large scale incident command structure as well as live fire and ignition operations.
On Monday, committee members Josh Burke and Kelsey Weiss of the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD) reported more than 70 firefighters and over 20 fire apparatus are taking part.
More personnel and apparatus could be added.
Weiss said the burn will take place on the north side of the lake in the Enders Bay area, and is targeted to include acres north to the softball field.
If there is enough personnel, some burning may take place south of the lake, too, he said.
Personnel will begin checking in at 7 a.m. that morning. Weiss said it’s estimated burning will be underway by 9 a.m.
Beau Licking, superintendent at Enders Lake SRA, said roughly 430 acres are targeted for the burn in the Enders Bay area, which is directly south of the town of Enders.
He said lake access will be closed off to all areas from the main boat ramp on the east toward the Area B campground and Enders Bay areas.
