Boaters from the area and nearby Colorado took full advantage of the beautiful Fourth of July weather at Enders Lake Recreation Area.

Enders Lake stays busy over holiday weekend

Enders State Recreation Area has been a popular destination this summer and the 4th of July weekend was no exception.
Thanks to alcohol restrictions at Lake McConaughy in Ogallala, lakes across southwest Nebraska, including Enders, have seen an increase in visitors.
Regional Game and Parks Supt. Aric Riggins said the electrical camping sites were 75% full and a lot of the primitive and beach sites were taken.
Many of the spots were filled with Colorado visitors, another trend Riggins said has been common across the area.
“I don’t see that changing,” Riggins said, noting that income across southwest Nebraska SRAs has “skyrocketed.”
Riggins said Enders was a popular destination for Father’s Day and the last weekend of June was also very busy.
“It’s been a little taxing on our trash receptacles,” Riggins said. Trash pickup is contracted out and Game and Parks officials didn’t anticipate such high attendance.
Though park offices are still closed, beaches and facilities are open. Game and Parks officers are advising visitors to adhere to group size and spacing restrictions according to COVID health directives, he added.
Overall, it was a really good weekend, Riggins said. “We only had simple problems to solve.”
